Launched in 2008, the SA Express Cadet Pilot Training Programme aims to address the imminent pilot shortage. This means that we are always searching for aspiring pilots! The airline committed to ensuring that it continues to provide opportunities to passionate, bright young South Africans from all walks of life.
SA Express is an incubator for scarce skills in order to lead transformation in the aviation industry. The Cadet programme trains pilots at beginner entry level into aviation industry.
The Cadet Mach I Programme – this introduction programme is designed for learners with a matric that have maths and science, level 5 minimum. These learners are will attain their PPL (private pilot’s license).
The Cadet Mach II Programme – this programme is designed to train pilots that have their private pilot’s license (PPL) and are trained to obtain their CPL (commercial pilot’s license) and the regulation 250 flying hours.

Through the successful implementation of the Cadet Programmes, the airline has managed to lead transformation in the industry by training in excess of 250 black pilots in the past ten years.
Historically, pilots from SA Express who have qualified through the Cadet Programme have been absorbed into SAA as direct entry pilots.
Potential candidates will follow the standard SA Express Selection Process:
- Technical Exam (Mach 2 only)
- Psychometric evaluation
- Simulator assessment (Mach 2 only)
- Medical evaluation
- Final Interview

|Cadet Mach 1
Mach 1 is the abinitio course for the cadets who have zero or very few flying hours. These candidates would have to be sent to a flying school for 18-24 months in order to complete a full Commercial Pilot’s License prior to being brought into SA Express to join the Dash 8 aircraft pool.
A tiered selection process will be followed for the Mach 1 Programme, with successful candidates sent to a flying school to study a SA Express developed and approved course.

Mathematics or Statistics 101
All subjects to be passed with a minimum:
D symbol on HG or C symbol on SG or Level 5
Maximum age: 25 years old
Minimum height: 1.60m
Pass a security competency assessment
Must be willing to relocate for the duration of the training
Must have good communication, judgement and decision-making skills
Must have the ability to multitask
Undergo a SACAA medical examination
Have good hand-eye co-ordination
Be highly self motivated and technically minded
Have the ability to work under pressure
Be confident and assertive
Be prepared to sign a training bond
